It was often carried as a sidearm by crossbowmen.{{sfn|Graff|2016|p=64}} The Divided Dao, also called a Long Dao (long saber), was a cross between a polearm and a saber. It consisted of a {{convert|91|cm|abbr=on}} blade fixed to a long {{convert|120|cm|abbr=on}} handle ending in an iron butt point, although exceptionally large weapons reaching {{convert|3|m|abbr=on}} in length and weighing {{convert|10.2|kg|abbr=on}} have been mentioned.<ref>{{citation |url=http://greatmingmilitary.blogspot.com/2015/04/zhan-ma-dao.html|title=Zhan Ma Dao (ζ¬ι¦¬ε)|date=7 April 2015 |access-date=15 April 2018}}</ref> Divided daos were wielded by elite Tang vanguard forces and used to spearhead attacks.{{sfn|Lorge|2011|p=103}} {{quotation|In one army, there are 12,500 officers and men.
